Movie Review - Charlie St. Cloud

The book was awesome and Zac Efron stars as the lead character? Destined to be amazing right.
While I won't say this movie was perfect, I will say it was amazing. When viewed as a movie based on a book it was horrible. They took substantial liberties - introduced characters way differently than in the book, excluded major parts that lead to a better understanding of the characters and central plot line. A letdown.
Judged solely as a movie - excellent. Zac Efron plays an emotionally conflicted teen/young adult well. Charlie Tahan, who plays Zacs little brother, is a great young actor. He pulls off innocence, humor and childhood wonder so well. The actress who plays Tess, the female lead (Amanda Crew) seems a bit awkward in her role. That could be due to a lack of character development for her in the movie as compared to the book. She straddles the line between developed / engaging love interest and extraneous / underdeveloped character.
Knowing the plot, at least as much as they tried to follow the book, made the setups easy to see coming, but lots of the twists and turns added for the movie came as a surprise.
Overall, it was a great movie. My fiance, who hasn't read the book, enjoyed the movie and definitely shed a few tears along with me.
Read the book (it's better - per usual, the book kicks the movie in the ass).
See the movie - and bring your kleenex box.
