Not something you see everyday.

The Carnival cruise ship Carnival Splendor is seen passing under the Golden Gate bridge Friday, May 1, 2009, in San Francisco. The outbreak of swine flu in Mexico is resulting in an unexpected boon for the Port of San Francisco, as cruise ships that ordinarily sail to places like Puerto Vallarta are being diverted to San Francisco. Health authorities have warned against unnecessary travel to Mexico because of the epidemic. Several cruise lines, including Carnival, which owns the Carnival Splendor, and Royal Caribbean, which owns the Mariner of the Seas, have canceled all calls at Mexican ports.

It's rare for large vessels to enter the SF Bay if they don't have to. The Bay is pretty treacherous for large vessels and there have been some major accidents in the past as a result of diversions into the Bay. Let's keep our fingers crossed these diversions don't cause further problems.
